Product Description
Jill’s’ painting represents ntange – seeds. Jill reflects on the days when edible seeds were an important part of their diet providing a valuable source of protein, oils, vitamins and fiber. She remembers the days when the old women spent a considerable amount of time and effort gathering and treating these seeds in some way before they could be eaten.
They used methods such as yandying, a labor intensive process to separate the seeds from the husks. Some seeds had to be roasted before they could be ground into a paste then cooked over warm coals. Others could be soaked in water to make a sweet drink, and others could be used for medicinal purposes.
Seventy odd plants species can be used for their edible seeds, the two most important being from grasses and wattles.
