In this painting Marie illustrates women walking around her country looking for and collecting bush akatyerre – bush tomato.
After a good season of rain the desert yields an amazing variety of plants that produce edible fruits in turn attracting grubs and ants that are also a delicacy, these include; Bush Banana, Quandong, Witchetty grub, Honey ants, Bush Tomato, Mistletoe Berries and Wild Figs.
These ‘bush foods’ are the themes for many of the ancestral stories or ‘dreamings’ from Marie’s fathers’ country – Alkwepetye, situated North East of Alice Springs in Central Australia. Increase ceremonies are preformed to ensure that the country continues to produce these important plants, insects etc.
