Product Description

The inspiration for the subtle floral motifs in Jessie’s paintings comes from thinking about the special days when the women and children have the opportunity to go out into their country to find and collect sugarbag or native honey. Searching through the native bushland, looking through the trees and shrubs for flowers that are attracting the native bees, then the fun starts with trying to follow these non-stinging quiet little bees back to their hives with great expectations of finding a hive full of sweet honey.

Sweet foods can be very hard to find living in the desert, a lot of energy and time can be spent in the pursuit of finding this delicacy.  Often relying on the seasons for particular flowers from the honey grevillea or corkwood trees, where the sweet nectar can be sucked from the flowers or soaking the flowers in water to make a sweet drink. Another favourite is the sweet gum from the bark of the ironwood and whitewood trees, which is scrapped off into little balls and eaten like a lolly. But the most highly favoured of the bush sweet food is the honey from native bee hives.  Many patient hours can be spent in these fun days of looking for sugarbag
