Product Description

Gary’s painting depicts a map of his ‘big country’ – Ilkawerne. It shows important sites, rock holes, soakages, tracks and roads. All these tracks and roads are leading to the most significant site; Aremela.  In the Dreamtime, Utnea – a gentle, quiet serpent made his way through this country creating the landscape, tracks and sites.

Ilkawerne lays approximately 200kms north east of Alice Springs in Central Australia.  It encompasses many stories which include; Ahakey – Bush Plum, Mulga Seed, Utnea – python, Prickle, Alpar – (herbaceous plant), small native grasses and Bush Coconut.  Each of the large red and black dots in the painting illustrates a rock hole which is the site for each of Gary’s dreaming stories.  Arc motifs represent soakage’s which also relate to these stories.  Central concentric circle is Aremela country and rock hole, all the protruding lines show travelling tracks leading to and from this important site.  Wavy black lines also represent Utnea who, through his movement across this country formed the landscape we see today
